4 Steps to Improving Productivity [useful tips]

Productivity

If you ask managers how important productivity is, you will surely hear the answer: โ€œwithout productivity,ย ourย companyย would not exist.โ€ ย

In this day and age, the big question is โ€˜how do you measure the productivity ofย remote work?โ€™ย

Many areas of work, especiallyย remote work, cannot be measured in traditional ways. The traditional way to measure productivity isย the return (or the output) of the three resources: time, knowledge and money (the input). Butย the inputs and outputs of business processes have changed completely in many ways over the last few years. ย

So is productivity still measurable in all areas and all jobs as you were used to?ย

Productivity today cannotย alwaysย be measured in existing ways, yet productivity must be measured. Productivity does notย necessarilyย mean that employees behindย computers are connected to a โ€œsystemโ€. What was productive in 2019 and 2020 may no longer be a sign of productivity today. The most pertinent point is this: you canโ€™t improve productivity if you donโ€™t measure it. So howย canย companiesย continue to be productive in the face of the global challenges we are facing currently?ย

Of course, there are still many โ€œtraditionalโ€ areas where youย canย continue to be productive in a steady way. There are also many areasย โ€“ย remote or hybrid working are two of those - where you will need toย adjust your measuring methods for productivity.ย ย

Above all, it is not always necessary to measure productivity. It is more important to manage it: you need to create a corporateย โ€œcultureโ€ย ofย productivity. A culture of productivity means adding value to all activities at all levels of the company: individuals, teams/departments and the organisation as a whole.ย

What does productivity mean?

Productivity means many things. Productivity means ensuring that all activities in anย organisationย make sense andย createย more value than costs, setting and achieving goals withย optimal use of resources, coordination of all efforts,ย and influencing everyone to pull in a common direction to achieve the goals of the team and theย organisation.ย ย

Productivity means that people, processes, and systems are efficient and successful. Processes and systems may have been efficient and effective in achieving results until employees started working remotely or in a hybrid. Over the last few years, weโ€™ve had to adapt our ways of workingย so that we can still ensure better productivity.

Itโ€™s the same with systems and processes in a company - but with one key difference:ย Systems and processes do not operate on their own, but are managed by people.ย Remember that evenย Artificialย Intelligence (AI)ย is also prepared,ย organisedย and run by humans.

Productivity is related to the wayย howย people invest their time, knowledge and resourcesย (money and materials) at their disposal. The best companies do even more. Excellent companies do the following:ย

1.

Create a great culture withย โ€˜Employeeshipโ€™ behaviour

Employeeshipย is characterised by everyoneโ€™s commitment, trust, responsibility, loyalty, and initiative.

Itย means doing your best and is the foundation on whichย youย build good productivity.ย

2.

Create a culture of productivity

Everyone in the companyย -ย managers and employeesย - should always think about how they invest their time, knowledge and resources to create more value.ย

3.

Develop leadership and managerial behaviour

Everyone in the company must set SMART (Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely) goals in their specificย field of operation,ย and seek toย improve and innovateย new processes, services and products.ย

4.

Develop HR business partners

They will understand the company's strategy and translate it into employee productivity and look to develop their competencies appropriately.

Accepted and expandedย remote workingย in the company requires everyone to rethink and redefine their productivity.ย

There are few good measures that would always suit everyone (i.e. a "one size fits all" approach) and it's difficult to really benefit everyone in the company. You need to find your answers to the question of productivity in the future and apply some golden rules to the development of your human capital.ย

Measuring employee productivity is perhaps more about appearances than effectiveness. And remember this: it's not worth measuring the productivity of a new idea if you don't implement it in a new product/service.ย
